Workstations for Revit

Most design work in Revit runs on a single CPU core, so clock speed matters more than core count. We size these machines on clock speed and memory, then add GPU power for visualisation.

What matters for Revit

  • High single-core clock speed
  • System memory sized to your model files
  • A modest professional GPU, or more if you render or use Enscape
  • NVMe storage with room for temporary files

Autodesk recommends the highest single-core clock speed, while noting that Revit uses multiple cores for many tasks (Autodesk Revit system requirements). In practice, most design tasks use one core, and more cores help mainly with rendering. Memory scales with model size: Autodesk lists 16GB for a model of about 300MB, 32GB for about 600MB and 64GB for about 1GB, and 64GB suits most users, with 96GB or more for large models. Graphics needs are modest. Autodesk’s tiers ask for 4GB, 6GB and 8GB of VRAM, and the RTX PRO 2000 or 4000 suits most users, with the RTX PRO 4500 or 5000 for GPU rendering. Our Standard build already sits above Autodesk’s top tier. Heavy moves to a 24GB RTX PRO 4000 and 128GB, and Studio to a 32GB RTX PRO 4500 and 256GB for large models with Enscape or GPU rendering alongside. Because modelling is mostly single-threaded, a Threadripper or more GPUs add nothing for Revit itself, so larger teams add seats.

Frequently asked questions

From Revit 2023.1, Autodesk replaced card certification with a direct check of DirectX, Shader Model and GPU memory, and supports hardware that meets the system requirements (Autodesk certification FAQ). Professional cards are still preferred for reliability, which is why we fit NVIDIA RTX PRO cards.

Autodesk sizes memory to the model: 16GB for about 300MB, 32GB for about 600MB and 64GB for about 1GB (Autodesk Revit system requirements). 64GB suits most users, with 96GB or more for large models. Our configurations start at 64GB.

Mostly not. Most design tasks use a single core, and more cores help mainly with rendering. That is why every configuration here uses a high-clock desktop processor rather than a Threadripper.

Standard suits students and smaller models and is above Autodesk’s top hardware tier. Heavy adds a 24GB card and 128GB for professional daily use on larger models. Studio adds 256GB and a 32GB card if you also run Enscape or GPU rendering.

Autodesk lists 30GB for the install plus 100GB free for temporary files (Autodesk Revit system requirements). NVMe storage is recommended for the operating system and projects. Every configuration here uses a Gen 5 NVMe drive.
