Workstations for V-Ray

V-Ray GPU uses every GPU your system detects, so card count and the memory on each card drive these builds. We also allow enough CPU cores to keep each card busy.

What matters for V-Ray

  • Number of GPUs for faster V-Ray GPU renders
  • GPU memory per card for your largest scenes
  • About six CPU cores per GPU
  • System memory at about twice your total GPU memory
  • For V-Ray CPU: core count and clock speed

V-Ray has two engines, and these configurations are built for V-Ray GPU. Chaos says it can use as many GPUs as the operating system detects (Chaos V-Ray GPU). It scales well with extra cards, but not linearly, so we stop at four GPUs per machine until we have tested more. Chaos recommends about six CPU cores per GPU, which is why the two-card Heavy uses the 24-core Threadripper 9960X and the four-card Studio uses the 24-core Threadripper PRO 9965WX. Standard starts with one NVIDIA RTX PRO 5000 48GB, with 48GB of ECC memory for GPU rendering. Studio moves to four RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Max-Q 96GB cards in the Nano Pro, which gives each GPU a full PCIe Gen5 x16 link without riser cables, for scenes that need more memory per card. System memory follows a rule of thumb of about twice the total GPU memory. Hybrid rendering on the CPU and GPU together is supported (Chaos V-Ray GPU). If you render mainly with V-Ray CPU, core count and clock speed decide speed, so ask us about a CPU-focused build.

Frequently asked questions

Chaos says V-Ray GPU uses every GPU the operating system detects (Chaos V-Ray GPU). It scales well, but not linearly. Because the gain per extra card is not settled, we stop at four GPUs per machine and recommend more machines beyond that.

V-Ray CPU scales very well with both clock speed and core count, and the strongest choice is the 96-core Threadripper PRO 9995WX. Our Corona Renderer configurations are built the same way, around core count, so they suit V-Ray CPU work. If you are unsure about memory, allow 128GB or more.

Yes. Chaos supports hybrid rendering on the CPU and GPU at the same time (Chaos V-Ray GPU). Every configuration here has a capable processor alongside its GPUs.

For V-Ray GPU, allow about twice your total GPU memory, which is how these configurations are sized. For V-Ray CPU, it depends on the scene; allow 128GB or more if you are unsure.

Standard suits a single artist on a budget, with one NVIDIA RTX PRO 5000 48GB. Heavy suits a professional or freelancer who wants two cards. Studio is for a studio or team: four 96GB cards in one workstation for large scenes and fast turnaround.
