Workstations for OctaneRender

OctaneRender speeds up almost in step with the number of GPUs, and the memory on each card sets the largest scene it can hold. We size these machines around GPU count first, then memory per card.

What matters for OctaneRender

  • Number of GPUs: speed rises almost in line with card count
  • GPU memory per card for scene size and the denoiser
  • An NVIDIA CUDA card
  • High CPU clocks rather than a high core count
  • System memory at about twice your total GPU memory

OctaneRender needs an NVIDIA CUDA card (OTOY hardware requirements), and it scales close to linearly: two cards are about twice as fast as one, and four about four times. That makes GPU count the main lever, which is why this range runs from one card to eight. CPU clock speed matters and core count does not, so the budget goes on GPUs. Each card must hold the scene, and mixed cards are limited to the smallest card’s memory (OTOY). Octane can move data out of core into system memory, and OTOY quotes about 5GB of GPU memory for the denoiser at 4K and about 20GB at 8K (OTOY hardware requirements). Standard and Heavy use the NVIDIA RTX PRO 5000 48GB, with 48GB of ECC memory per card to hold larger scenes. Studio fits four in the Nano Pro, each on a full PCIe Gen5 x16 link without riser cables. Team moves to the Molecule Air with eight RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell Max-Q 96GB cards, a blower-style card suited to multi-GPU builds. System memory follows a rule of thumb of about twice the total GPU memory.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Octane scales close to linearly, with two cards about twice as fast as one and four about four times. That is why we offer an eight-GPU configuration for Octane.

Octane can render out of core, using system memory, and OTOY recommends at least 16GB of system memory for this (OTOY hardware requirements). Every configuration here has 128GB or more. If you mix cards, all of them are limited to the smallest card’s memory.

No. OTOY’s hardware requirements call for an NVIDIA CUDA card, so every configuration here uses NVIDIA GPUs.

Yes, but Octane network rendering is limited to 20 GPUs in total. Tell us how many machines you plan to run and we will help you plan the split.

Standard suits a single artist on a budget, with one NVIDIA RTX PRO 5000 48GB. Heavy suits a professional or freelancer and doubles the cards. Studio puts four NVIDIA RTX PRO 5000 48GB cards in one workstation for a studio or team. Team is for large teams and enterprise work: eight 96GB cards in the Molecule Air, shared by a team or used as the studio’s render node.
