Workstations for Corona Renderer

Corona Renderer renders on the CPU, so processor cores decide render time. The GPU only drives your viewport, so we put the budget into cores and memory.

What matters for Corona Renderer

  • CPU core count for render time
  • System memory for the size of your scenes
  • A professional GPU for the viewport, not for rendering
  • More machines, not more GPUs, for bigger jobs

Chaos describes Corona as CPU based: it uses the CPU, runs on Intel Embree and does not need any special hardware (Chaos Corona). The GPU plays no part in rendering, so every configuration uses the same NVIDIA RTX PRO 2000 Blackwell 16GB for the viewport and puts the budget into the processor. Chaos does not publish how Corona scales with cores, but for most CPU render engines, twice the cores is almost twice as fast. Standard uses the 16-core Ryzen 9 9950X3D for single-artist work. Heavy moves to the 64-core Threadripper 9980X with 256GB of memory. Studio uses the 96-core Threadripper PRO 9995WX with 512GB in the Nano Pro. The step from 64 to 96 cores gives less than the core count suggests: in KeyShot CPU rendering, the 9980X reaches more than 80% of the 9995WX. Chaos publishes no memory figure, so tell us about your largest scenes and we will check the memory. When one machine is not enough, more machines help more than more GPUs.

Frequently asked questions

No. Chaos says Corona uses the CPU and does not need any special hardware; any future GPU use would be for post effects only (Chaos Corona). The GPU in these machines drives your viewport.

Chaos does not publish Corona-specific scaling. As a guide, in KeyShot CPU rendering the 64-core Threadripper 9980X reaches more than 80% of the 96-core Threadripper PRO 9995WX. Studio is for those who want the most from one machine; Heavy is the better value.

Machines. Corona does not render on the GPU, so extra cards add nothing to render time (Chaos Corona). More processors, in more machines, is how you add capacity.

Chaos does not publish a memory figure for Corona. Heavy has 256GB and Studio 512GB. Send us details of your largest scene and we will check it fits comfortably.

Standard suits a single artist on a budget. Heavy suits a professional or freelancer and quadruples the cores to 64. Studio is for a studio or team that wants the most cores and memory in one workstation.
