Workstations for Avid Media Composer

Avid sets its hardware guidance by resolution and codec, so we size these machines to its published memory and processor figures. They use NVIDIA RTX PRO graphics and are not on Avid’s qualified systems list.

What matters for Avid Media Composer

  • Memory for your formats: 64GB to 96GB for four streams of XAVC-I UHD, 128GB or more for 8K
  • A 64-core or larger processor for 8K projects
  • A professional GPU, in line with the cards Avid lists
  • A DeckLink card for capture and monitoring

Avid publishes its guidance by format rather than by benchmark. The Media Composer 2025.6 ReadMe gives 16GB of memory as the minimum and 32GB as recommended, 64GB (96GB recommended) for four streams of XAVC-I UHD at 59.94p, and at least 128GB plus a Xeon or Threadripper with 64 or more cores for 8K projects (Avid ReadMe). The GPUs Avid lists are professional cards, so every tier here uses NVIDIA RTX PRO graphics. The ReadMe does not cover multiple GPUs, so each build has one card. Standard pairs a Ryzen 9 9950X3D and 128GB with an RTX PRO 4000 Blackwell 24GB. Heavy moves to the RTX PRO 5000 Blackwell 48GB for multistream work. Studio meets Avid’s 8K guidance with a 64-core Threadripper 9980X and 256GB. Blackmagic states that DeckLink cards work with Media Composer for 10-bit uncompressed and DNxHD capture and playback (Blackmagic Design). Avid qualifies complete systems from named manufacturers, and its 2025.6 GPU list does not include Blackwell cards, so these are not Avid-qualified configurations.

Frequently asked questions

No. Avid qualifies complete systems from a short list of major manufacturers, and the GPUs in its 2025.6 ReadMe do not include Blackwell cards (Avid ReadMe). If your facility or support contract requires a qualified system, tell us before you order.

Avid’s ReadMe asks for at least 128GB of memory and a Xeon or Threadripper with 64 or more cores for 8K (Avid ReadMe). Studio meets both, with a 64-core Threadripper 9980X and 256GB.

Blackmagic states that DeckLink works with Media Composer, Symphony and NewsCutter for 10-bit uncompressed and DNxHD capture and playback (Blackmagic Design). We have not confirmed Avid’s own qualification of specific DeckLink models, so check with us for your version.

Standard suits HD and single-stream 4K editing. Heavy adds a 48GB card for multistream UHD work. Studio is for 8K projects and capture work that needs more cores.

Avid’s ReadMe does not address multiple GPUs (Avid ReadMe), so each configuration here has one card. A larger facility usually needs more seats and shared storage rather than a bigger machine.
